How Great Thou Art...
One of my favorite times of day is at night when I am putting CK to bed. Why? Because I get to rock him in the glider chair and sing him to sleep. Any of you who know the little buddy know that he is into EVERYTHING right now...running climbing, jumping, throwing things, not to mention falling....just go go GO all day long! But as soon as he's in his jammies for the night and we've brushed his teeth and he's into his sleep sack I pick him up and take him into his room and we sit down in the glider. As soon as we're sitting he is into ultimate snuggle mode and he looks up at me as I sing to him like a sweet little angel.
Now, I am no singer...well I sing alot and I can carry a tune but I would not call me a singer at all. But little CK loves it when I sing and has since he was a newborn. Usually it doesn't take long, maybe ten fifteen minutes at the most, but not a night goes by that I don't sing one special song to him. It's almost as if he won't go to sleep if I don't sing it.
The song is the hymn "How Great Thou Art", which is one of my most favorite and beloved hymns. It comes from years of girls camp where it was our tradition on the last night to sing the hymn acapella style outside and everyone had a candle. Amazing. The spirit was so very strong...even remembering those nights now brings the spirit to me.
So, Calvin loves this song too, so I have sort of adopted it as his lullaby. And even though I sing it every single night basically (except the nights Jess puts CK to bed), I cannot get through the song without crying. Once I hit the third verse it is inevitable. Calvin doesn't seem to mind, I think he almost expects it now, and we both feel the beautiful calming spirit together that fills his nursery.
If you are unfamiliar with the hymn you should become familiar with it. The words are so compelling, and bring such a joy to my heart singing them every night to my beautiful son.
Verse 3:
I thank my Heavenly Father every day for the blessed life that I have. This song touches me so deeply every time I sing the words because it makes me think about what Jesus did for me personally, the burdens he had to bear for my mistakes, and it breaks my heart. He loves me, and you, and all of us equally and bore all of our sins and gave his own life for us to be able to return again to Him again.
I hope that these words can touch you as deeply as they touch me. Read more...
